From the Woods to the Wedding: A Woodside Mobile Milling Story

A behind-the-scenes look at a challenging mobile milling project in Woodside, California. Out of the Woods hiked equipment up a steep trail to mill a fallen redwood tree on-site. Over two days, the raw slabs were extracted and crafted into custom live-edge dining tables with modern metal bases and matching benches supported by heavy-duty square wood bases for a family wedding.

When clients asked us to transform a fallen redwood on their Woodside property into tables and benches for an upcoming wedding, we knew it wouldn't be a standard job. The tree was located in a tight, remote spot on the property—completely inaccessible by trucks or heavy equipment.

The Harvest: Two Days of Grunt Work

Getting our mobile mill to the tree required hiking the equipment up a steep, difficult trail by hand. Milling the log on-site was a two-day test of endurance, but the real challenge was hauling the massive, raw slabs back out through the rugged terrain.

The Build: Modern Table, Stable Benches

Once back at our Santa Cruz shop, the focus shifted to balancing clean design with functional durability:

The Dining Tables: We paired the deep-toned, wide redwood slabs with sleek, minimalist black metal bases. The clean lines of the steel contrast perfectly with the raw, organic live edge of the wood.
The Benches: To ensure absolute stability on the outdoor decking, our team built heavy-duty, square timber block bases from the same redwood. These solid wood bases anchor the long benches and prevent any tipping.

The final setup provides a massive, durable outdoor dining space built entirely from a tree that grew right on the property—a rugged project that cleaned up beautifully.
